Don’t be a psychopathic business owner

I read the other day: ‘If people behaved like most businesses, they’d be called psychopaths’.

I think that’s true.

Many businesses behave like this:

  • They focus on appearance over substance (like Mr Trump?)
  • They push people out of their comfort zone to get more customers (like Mr Johnson?)
  • They don’t care about the collateral damage as long as they’re moving forward in some way (like Mr Putin?)
  • They only measure outcomes … it doesn’t matter how they were achieved (like spin doctors)
  • And they say all the right things, whilst doing all the shady, underhand things behind the scenes (like some politicians?)

That’s why so few small businesses break though and become long-term successful.

If they behave in the same way as the existing larger businesses, they’ll never get noticed and they’ll never attract enough customers to grow,

Instead, the truly successful, long term sustainable, businesses slow down and do things properly, authentically and transparently.

There are few of them (that’s why it’s such a good business practice to do it this way), but as Jeff Bezos said: 

  • “The keys to success are patience, persistence, and obsessive attention to detail.”


  • “We innovate by starting with the customer and working backwards. That becomes the touchstone for how we invent.”

So: don’t be a psychopathic business owner: do it differently: follow the ideas of ‘Slow Selling’, and you’ll quickly become super attractive to new customers and your sales and profits will grow and grow.
