the 8th habit

As some of you may know, I’m a huge fan of ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’.

I try to live it every day.

And I teach and coach it to others.

A few years after ‘The 7 Habits’ was published (and became the best selling self-development book of all time), Dr Covey published a follow-up book called ‘The 8th Habit’.

The eighth habit is “Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs.” 

Voice is Covey’s code for “unique personal significance.” Those who inspire others to find theirs are the leaders needed now and for the future, according to Covey.

And, while this is very noble, I suggest that very few people have read or follow this idea.

I suggest instead that perhaps the 8th habit could have been: ‘KEEP GOING!’

I.e. The 7 Habits are based on principles of timeless, universal, self-evident common sense … easy to understand, but hard to apply in your life every day.

For example: It’s common sense that, in order to be healthy, we need to exercise, eat well and get a good amount of sleep.

But it’s easier to loaf around, eat badly and stay up late watching Netflix!

So, just for fun, when I teach ‘The 7 Habits’ (and also ‘Slow Selling’), and when I coach people, the key point I help them with is: ‘KEEP GOING!’

It’s easy to get started , but it’s hard to keep it up.

And that’s the whole point of keeping in touch with someone like me, or the principles of ‘Slow Selling’ (or indeed ‘The 7 Habits’) (And, by the way, all the 4 principles of ‘Slow Selling’ align with the principles of ‘The 7 Habits’).

But you need a system, a structure and some support to keep going.

Maybe it’s the real 8th habit?
